Today FRC Action PAC, the political action committee connected to Family Research Council Action, is endorsing Marco Rubio for the U.S. Senate representing Florida. Tony Perkins, President of FRC Action, made the following statement:

Gov. Charlie Crist’s new U.S. Senate campaign ad continues to backfire. First, morning show host Many Connell deconstructed it on-air as, essentially, a vomit-provoking “lie.” Now Cato Institute’s Tax Policy Director Christ Edwards, who gave Crist an “A” in his Fiscal Policy Report Card on America’s Governors,” is annotating Crist’s decision to mention the grade in the Connell-maligned radio ad.

According to the Herald’s Naked Politics (October 16), Gov. Charlie Crist is trumpeting his grade of “A” on Cato’s “Fiscal Policy Report Card on America’s Governors.” The governor earned the grade in last year’s report based mainly on his property tax cuts and moderate spending approach.

I am pleased that Crist values Cato’s ratings because we work hard to make them accurate and nonpartisan. But as the report’s author, I am concerned that the governor has fallen off the fiscal responsibility horse since the report was written in mid-2008.

In particular, Crist approved a huge $2.2 billion tax increase for the fiscal 2010 budget, even though he had promised that $12 billion in federal “stimulus” money showered on Florida over three years would obviate the need for tax increases.

About $1 billion of the tax increases are on cigarette consumers, which will particularly harm moderate-income families. The rest of the increases are in the form of higher costs for often mandatory services, such as automobile registration, which is really just a sneaky form of tax increases.

These tax increases will be particularly painful to Floridians in the short-term because of the recession. But Crist has also jeopardized the state’s long-term finances with his expanded subsidies for hurricane insurance. Hurricanes are a major challenge in Florida, but giving big subsidies to coastal property owners, driving private insurers out of the state, and guaranteeing a massive state bailout when the next hurricane hits strikes me as the height of fiscally irresponsibility.

Gov. Charlie Crist’s lead over former state house speaker Marco Rubio in the 2010 Republican U.S. Senate primary has been cut in half from 55 – 26 percent to 50 – 35 percent, but the Governor tops the leading Democrat, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, 51 – 31 percent among all voters, while Rubio trails Meek 36 – 33 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

“Gov. Charlie Crist’s lead, which had been 29 points August 19, has come back down to earth.  His margin is still formidable, but obviously Marco Rubio’s focus on convincing Republican conservatives that he, not Crist, is their kind of guy is bearing fruit,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“Among Republicans, 44 percent view Rubio favorably, 3 percent unfavorably, up from 24 – 6 percent August 19.  But fully half don’t know enough about him to have an opinion.  Filling in that blank slate for that half of GOP voters – positively by Rubio and negatively by Crist – will decide the nomination.

“Floridians now give Crist the worst overall job approval of his governorship, 59 – 31 percent, but governors of many other states would sell their first born – or at least their running mate – for numbers like that,” said Brown.  “But because only Republicans can vote in the GOP primary, Rubio’s strong favorable/unfavorable ratio among Republicans is something that should worry the Governor.”

Crist’s 51 – 31 percent lead over Meek is largely due to his 58 – 22 percent margin among independent voters.  In a Rubio-Meek face-off, independents tip to the Republican by a small 31 – 27 percent margin.

Miami, FL–Despite U.S. Senate candidate and former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio’s open invitation for a series of campaign debates, Governor Charlie Crist has thus far declined, saying he’s too busy “governing.”

On Friday, Crist will repeat his performance at July’s Florida Society of News Editors/Florida Press Association conference when he attends another statewide organization’s conference only to duck out before the candidate forum.

According to The Miami Herald, “All of the major contenders for governor and U.S. Senate have agreed to attend a candidates’ forum Friday evening in Orlando hosted by the Florida Association of Realtors. Except the Senate frontrunner, Gov. Charlie Crist. … The event will mark the second time Crist has declined an opportunity to contrast himself with his Republican rival, former House Speaker Marco Rubio. The latest from Rasmussen Reports: Conservative Republicans in Florida may be rumbling about Charlie Crist’s run for the U.S. Senate, but so far the governor is well ahead of his chief 2010 GOP Primary challenger.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the Sunshine State shows Crist leading former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio by 22 points among likely Republican Primary voters – 53% to 31%. Five percent (5%) prefer some other candidate, and 11% are undecided.

Still, the fact that Crist is barely above 50% in a primary against a much lesser known opponent suggests at least a potential vulnerability.

During a visit to Jacksonville to promote adoption in Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist reiterated his opposition to gay adoption in the state.

But when asked about it three hours earlier in Tallahassee, he sounded less opposed.

As a part of his statewide tour for “Explore Adoption Day,” Crist spoke to a crowded courtroom at the Duval County Courthouse about the increase in adoptions throughout the state.

Crist and other adoption advocates talked about the need for even more adoption, especially for older children who have a difficult time making it out of the system.

When he was running for governor in 2006, Crist told The St. Petersburg Times, “My position is the traditional family is the best to adopt.” He reaffirmed that statement on Wednesday in Jacksonville.

“I think Florida has it right right now,” he told The Times-Union.

Earlier in the day, Tallahassee reporters asked if he would support legislation to change the law, he left the door open, saying, “I’d have to think about it.”

Some advocates think that allowing gay couples to adopt children could help those children in Florida who haven’t found a home yet. And the American Civil Liberties Union is suing to overturn a 1977 law making Florida the only state with an outright ban on gay adoption.

“Excluding a class of people is harmful to children, particularly those in our state who have had gay foster parents,” ACLU spokesman Larry Spalding told The Associated Press.

The governor, who is vying for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate, visited Tallahassee, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale to promote his adoption initiative. During his 2006 governor’s campaign, he emphasized adoption as an alternative to abortion.

For the last two years, Florida has set state records for adoptions with 3,700 in 2008-09 and 3,674 in 2007-08. Florida has also decreased the number of children entering Florida’s foster care system by 32 percent.

“To have Florida set a record for adoption two years in a row is incredible,” Crist said. “It’s not the numbers that mean so much. What means so much is the love there is when an adoption occurs.”

Two families even got a little bigger at Wednesday’s event as two adoptions were finalized by local judges in front of the crowd.

Gary and Emma Stamper of Jacksonville adopted their grandchildren Deborah, 11, and Russell, 10.

After nearly 10 years in foster homes, Aaron Cooper, 17, was also adopted by Wayne and Deborah Norman of St. Augustine. He met the couple through his church and said he couldn’t be happier.

“It’s so wonderful to feel that you have a family that loves you,” he said.
