Senate President Jeff Atwater tapped Sen. J.D. Alexander to chair the Ethics & Elections Committee now that Sen. John Thrasher stepped down once he became head of the Republican Party of Florida. Atwater spokeswoman Jaryn Emhof said Atwater chose Alexander, who was chair last year, because he was already on the committee. That way, she said, the president wouldn’t have to tap someone from another committee and start a domino effect of “shuffling people around” from one committee to the next.

One of those people who wanted to be shuffled: Sen. Paula Dockery, wrote Atwater earlier today:

This letter serves as a notification of my desire to serve as chair of the Senate Ethics & Elections Committee, in addition to my current chairmanship of the Criminal Justice Committee. The people of Florida are rightfully demanding substantial ethics reforms. The chairperson that you select for this committee will be in a position to truly listen to the people and begin the restoration of the public trust.

I have been emphasizing this need for the past three years and have researched changes that would restore the integrity of our beloved institution, and my sincere desire to use my leadership skills for this critical purpose, as well as my record on transparency and open government makes me the logical candidate for the job.

Thank you in advance for your careful consideration in this matter.

Interestingly enough Senator Dockery has been the only one calling for Ethics Reform in the state legislature. J. D. Alexander refused to remove himself from the Sun Rail vote, even though he stood to benefit financially from the vote. His recently acquired company Phoenix Industries in Winter Haven is located adjacent to the CSX rail line. The company specializes in Rail to Truck transportation, Cold and Perishable Storage.

The way I see J.D.’s appointment is simple. It’s a classic case of a FOX WATCHING THE HEN HOUSE! Not to mention the Sun Rail connection between Jeff Atwater and J.D. Alexander, but then again seems as if it’s business as usual in Tallahassee.

The past state president of the Florida Republican Women’s Clubs and current Polk REC committeewoman, Linda Ivell of Lakeland, ended her campaign for the Florida House seat from District 64 today.

“Ironically, the difficult business environment that has wreaked havoc on others, now directly impacts my family,” Ivell said in a message to supporters and volunteer staff on why she is dropping out of the race.

She said that her husband, David Ivell, who works for PegasusTSI, which filed for protection during re-organization under Chapter 11 a week ago, will be fully focused on helping his company through the reorganization process and that she and her family will devote their time to giving him support.

“This is a very personal calling for our entire family,” Ivell said. “The engineering community in Polk County is a small one. These are not just jobs at stake; these are families that we know personally who are affected.”

Her announcement leaves former Polk County Commissioner Neil Combee, for whom the county administration building is named, as the only Republican candidate and the favorite candidate. Democrat Carol Castagnero is also running for the post.

Linda had lots of factors going against here in this race. She is a sitting member of the grievance committee which basically kicks Republicans out of the party for not being Republican enough.

The race is to fill the seat of Rep. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, who is leaving the post to run for the state Senate seat from District 15 left vacant by Sen. Paula Dockery, another Lakeland Republican, who is running for governor.

Last night was the regularly scheduled meeting of the Polk County Republican Executive Committee took place. Most of these meetings are just business meetings with very little excitement-taking place. However last nights meeting was fantastic. One of the items on the agenda was discussing the state party leadership. Specifically the vacate chairman position created after Jim Greer resigned.

So far two candidates have emerged from the pack Florida State Senator John Thrasher and current RNC secretary Sharon Day. The problem is RPOF and the state elected leadership is trying to force John Thrasher down everyone’s throat. If you were paying attention when Jim Greer resigned, you received an email about 20 minutes later announcing endorsements for John Thrasher.

Party rules state that for Thrasher to be considered for the Chairman position he has to first be a sitting state committeeman. At this time he was not. It was not until this past week that he was. If readers will recall this is almost identical to how Jim Greer came into power as well. He was not a sitting committeeman as well. They bent the rules and backs were scratched because that’s what the Governor wanted.

The RPOF has a loyalty oath, which all members of the REC must sign to be actual members. This loyalty oath bars members from donating to candidates other than Republicans, or assisting their campaigns in any way that is harmful to the Republican Party. Thrasher is guilty of violating this loyalty oath by donating to members of the Democratic Party of Florida on NUMEROUS occasions.

The reason for the background information on the prospective chairmen is simple; it was all brought up last night. With that said, an aide from John Thrasher’s campaign was in attendance and rebuked some of this. However the evidence spoke for itself and he was quickly shut down.

State Committeeman Robert Norman said “Sharon Day is one of us. She is a grassroots leader. She isn’t an outsider like Greer was. “ Chairman of the Polk REC Gene Roberts was leaning towards voting for John Thrasher. He said that the Senator had called and talked with him earlier in the week. However shortly after saying this a voice from the back of the room shouted “But we elected you to represent US.” So a motion for a vote was brought forward to find out whom the REC supported for chairman.

All of those in favor of Sharon Day shouted “AYE” all of those for Senator John Thrasher “….” You could almost hear crickets chirping outside. Not a single person spoke up to support Lobbyist, Democrat Supporter, and Senator John Thrasher. It seems that the Republican Party is coming around and holding feet to the fire, and this is EXACTLY what it takes to WIN!

Lakeland, FL – Dennis Ross, Republican Candidate for Congress in District 12, today called on Lori Edwards to publicly disavow or explain her connection to a push poll being conducted across district 12, by notorious push pollster, Sun Surveys. Beyond engaging in deceptive questioning, the poll conducted a head to head ballot test of Lori Edwards v. Dennis Ross. Either someone is conducting a poll for Lori Edwards or the Edwards campaign is. Dennis Ross released the following statement after hearing of this push poll:

“This is the kind of thing voters are tired of. If they are not outright lying about someone they are failing to do their homework. In this case, it is both. Lori Edwards should publicly disavow any knowledge of this poll or explain her connection to it and why she is conducting it. Instead of asking the voters outrageous questions, Lori Edwards should answer questions about health care, cap and tax, card check, deficit spending, bailouts, and other statist legislation her leadership is proposing in Congress.”

After receiving information about the push poll, Polk County Republican Executive Committee Chairman, Gene Roberts, personally issued the following statement,

“As chairman of the Polk Republican Executive Committee, I was disappointed to learn that the Democrats, and especially U.S. House of Representatives candidate Lori Edwards, are engaging in inaccurate and incorrect accusations against Dennis Ross, Republican candidate for U.S. House of Representatives. I have always believed that as a candidate you should run on your own merits such as character, integrity, previous record and stand on issues. Once you start attacking your opponent by using negative and deceptive ‘push polling’ it shows that the candidate is desperate and afraid of losing the election.”

The “push” question, corroborated by several voters who received the call, asserted that Dennis Ross accepted a trip to Bermuda, paid for by a lobbyist. This assertion is demonstrably false.

In 2006, then Representative Dennis Ross was invited to speak to a Reinsurance conference in Bermuda. The trip was not paid for by a lobbyist, as asserted falsely by the push pollster, but was paid for by Dennis Ross himself. Dennis paid for his own travel and expenses to attend the conference. The only item not paid for by Dennis Ross was a conference dinner after the panel. Dennis, however, made sure to check with the House of Representative General Counsel to make sure that it was within the ethics rules to participate in the dinner with other attendees and speakers at the conference. (Letter attached) In addition, the people putting on the conference were not lobbyists, nor registered to lobby in the State of Florida.

The purpose of then Rep. Ross making the trip was to warn the industry that if they did not lower their rates, the State of Florida would get involved in their industry. Unfortunately, they did not listen to Dennis and the State of Florida is now in the Reinsurance business and the taxpayers are on the hook for the over $4 billion of debt in the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. If that was not bad enough, taxpayers are also responsible for the billions of dollars in debt of the government owned Citizens Property Insurance Company. In other words, Dennis warned against Florida’s “public option” years before Congress tried it nationally.

The push poll, according to representations made by the callers, was conducted by Sun Surveys, a notorious push pollster. Sun Surveys is based in Miami, Fla., and has an “F” rating from the Southeast Florida Better Business Bureau. An “F” rating means, “We strongly question the company’s reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law’s licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company’s industry is known for its fraudulent business practices.” (http://www.seflorida.bbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=11011932)

After receiving calls about the poll, Ross Campaign Manager, Fred Piccolo said, “While it is unfortunate that Lori Edwards and her controllers in Washington feel they have to falsely attack someone to boost their poll numbers, the Ross campaign will continue to present a forward looking, positive agenda. This agenda will include balancing our federal budget, paying down our debt, introducing real market reforms in health care, the economy, and education to put American citizens back to work, securing our borders, and empowering families to make the best choices for themselves. But if Dennis is falsely accused of anything, rest assured, we will respond vigorously.”

Lakeland, FL – The Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police, today endorsed Dennis Ross, to be the Republican nominee. Upon receiving the FOP endorsement, Dennis Ross said,

“The mission of the Fraternal Order of Police could rightly be called a mission for America. From supporting and defending the Constitution, to encouraging social, charitable, and educational activities for members, and striving to improve performance and efficiency, the FOP serves as a model of leadership for our community and our nation. I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful that an organization representing those who risk life and limb everyday for the safety and security of all of us, would endorse my campaign for Congress. I do not take such confidence and support lightly and will strive, everyday, to serve with principle, integrity, and honor. Thank you to the FOP for the endorsement, but more importantly, thank you to the 325,000 members who serve and protect our communities everyday.”

According to fop.net, The Fraternal Order of Police is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges. The FOP is the voice of those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our communities. The FOP is committed to improving the working conditions of law enforcement officers and the safety of those they serve through education, legislation, information, community involvement, and employee representation.

The following press release was sent out earlier by the Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police:
Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police announces our Republican Primary endorsement of Dennis Ross for United States House of Representatives – District 12

The Florida State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police announces our endorsement of Dennis Ross in the Republican Primary election for District 12, United States House of Representatives. Mr. Ross is an advocate of strong conservative view points and personal responsibility. He has served Florida well as a State Representative. We believe Dennis has the conviction and integrity to do what is right for Florida citizens. He will make the tough decisions to bring respect back to Congress and put the Congress back on track to do the business of the people.

After carefully considering his legislative platform and real life experience, the Fraternal Order of Police, Florida State Lodge is pleased to lend our name to Mr. Ross for his primary campaign for election to the United States House of Representatives – District 12.

Sincerely,

James W. Preston, President

This seat is currently held by Paula Dockery who has announced her gubernatorial campaign. Florida State Senate District 15 is composed of portions of Polk, Hernando, Sumter, Lake and Osceola counties.

“I am announcing my candidacy for the Florida State Senate because we need people in Tallahassee who have the right values, the right experience, and will make the tough but right choices,” Kelli Stargel stated.

“We need to turn our state’s economy around. I want to ensure that our hard earned tax dollars and being used efficiently. Most importantly we need to encourage businesses to produce good paying jobs. To do this, we must have fiscal conservatives who will control the state budget, limit taxes, and wisely invest in the future,” Kelli Stargel said.

“We cannot have a vibrant, diverse, and growing economy without a well educated and flexible work force. That requires education reform and that has been and will continue to be my focus,” Kelli Stargel promised.

“I am not a career politician; I am an average citizen who has been afforded a great opportunity to make a difference for the people of Central Florida. It has been a privilege to serve in the Florida House and I’m honored that so many have encouraged me to run for the Florida Senate.”

Kelli Stargel is a 6th generation Floridian and lives in Lakeland, Florida. She and her husband John have been married for over 25 years. They have 5 children: three teenagers living at home, a daughter serving overseas as an officer in the US Army, and a daughter who was recently married.

Representative Stargel was elected in 2008 and currently serves as the State Representative for District 64 in the Florida House. She is currently the Vice-Chairman of the PreK-12 Appropriations Committee, and also serves on the Education Policy Council, PreK-12 Policy Committee and the Public Safety and Domestic Security Policy Committee.

Dockery, R-Lakeland, entered the 2010 race for governor on Tuesday. If Dockery doesn’t win and doesn’t resign early, Myers will aim his Senate campaign at the 2012 election, when Dockery must step down due to term limits. If she wins the race and resigns early, Myers said he is prepared to replace her on the Senate in 2010.

-	(Mayor) Jim Verplanck
-	(At Large) Howard Wiggs
-	(Northwest) Phillip Walker
-	(Southwest) Michael Dunn

Jim Verplanck is my choice for Mayor
Mr. Verplanck’s commitment to excellence in Lakeland City Government is what has earned him Central Florida Politics endorsement. Jim Verplanck has worked tirelessly for economic development of Lakeland and surrounding areas, which in turn brings jobs at a much-needed time. I believe that Jim Verplanck has the leadership skills needed to carry Lakeland to the next level. This is why Jim Verplanck has won the endorsement of Central Florida Politics.

Howard Wiggs gets nod for At Large Seat 1
Howard Wiggs is committed to serve. This is visible not only from his current elected position but in other areas as well. Howard has either chaired or served on Lakeland Vision, Polk Senior Games, Viste, Ridge League of Cities, Kiwanis, and Rotary just to name a few. I believe that Howard’s commitment to community will assist him in the next term to bring more jobs to the area. Howard Wiggs is a life long resident of Central Florida. Howard Wiggs has earned the endorsement of Central Florida Politics based on his commitment to community!

Phillip Walker earns endorsement
Phillip’s life story, his commitment to small business, his selfless service to the community, and his love of family are reasons why we have chosen to endorse Phillip’s campaign. As a past police officer he understand the need for public safety. I believe the election of Phillip Walker will be a great step forward for the city of Lakeland.
Michel Dunn Gets Endorsement over Don Selvage
The decision to support Michael Dunn was fairly easy. Don Selvage has mentioned several times that his role in Human Resources brings jobs to the area. Anyone that has ever been terminated knows that it also ends jobs as well. Currently we are researching a story linking Don Selvage and his SHR Human Resources LLC to terminations at Summit Holdings where 55 Lakeland Residents just lost their jobs. (More on that later) Both Michael Dunn and Don Selvage are veterans of the United States Marine Corps as am I. My choice for the election is Michael Dunn. Mike is a lifelong resident of Lakeland. Mike’s focus on Lakeland Electric is yet another great reason to support him. I have not heard another candidate speak about ways to fix Lakeland Electric. Mike is already giving suggestions to fix problems. This shows that he has put in the time and research to find amicable solutions to the problems. With this Mike Dunn has earned my endorsement.
